It is nothing but the plain truth to say that Haden has no purpose in life. It depresses him and lends him a permanently sardonic air. He craves, above all else, something to keep him occupied and hold the emptiness at bay. Brilliant and clever when he can rouse himself to action, he spends his time in pointless upper-class amusements, drinking, dicing, music, and the occasional theft when his pockets are empty. He sometimes resorts to heavy doses of powerful narcotics to fend off the pain of his headaches, a practice that renders him all-but-insensible.
His mother is a fearsome woman, a half-fiend of terrible ambition known as Lady Margone. Her ambition led her to marry Haden’s father—an elderly, good-natured, absent-minded half-celestial—in order to take over his fortunes and estate. The seduction was almost painfully easy, and she bore a single child to secure her position.
Haden is a disappointment to his mother, however. His frequent terrible headaches make him seem sickly, a fact that disgusts his fiendish mother. It is her belief that if he would definitively choose to follow one side of his mixed nature, the headaches would vanish and Haden would be a useful tool.
Haden’s father, Lord Cerellis, is mostly oblivious to his son. He spends most of his time reliving old battles and dreaming of long forgotten days. Haden enjoyed listening to the old man’s stories when he was a child; they gave him what little occupation he has. He has little interest in faction politics, but he hangs out a great deal with members of the Bleak Cabal, as most of them are similarly purposeless. However, even these ‘friends’ despise Haden, as his purposelessness is not an intentional, philosophical choice but rather the result of a total lack of commitment.
Occasionally, Haden wishes he could rouse the energy to be really interested in something; to fight for his life or his ideals. But his headaches make him fearful of losing his comfortable existence, even if it is dreary and full of pain.
