Hexla the Mad Witch is not what one expects. She’s a lovely young half-elf with green eyes and silver hair, who dresses in simple red robes.
Hexla was born in the Outlands, but a miscast spell sent her and her home to Avernus, first of the Nine Hells. She lived there for many years, searching for the sweetgrass and bat skulls needed to attempt the spell again, surviving by placing wards on her cave and subsisting on a wand of create food and water. She knew that the devils would not leave her alone, though, so she traveled to the Bronze Citadel and brokered some sort of deal with the layer’s archduke, Bel.
The half-elven ranger Talan found Hexla’s hut and shared her company for a time. By day, he helped her to look for the spell components; at night, he refused her advances. After a few days, Hexla told Talan that her wand was running low on charges. She advised him to consult the Pillar of Skulls for a way out of Avernus, in case they couldn’t find the components in time. While Talan went out to look again, Hexla slipped off to the Bronze Citadel to beg for the ranger’s life. Unfortunately, the arch-devil had not been aware of Talan until that moment. Hexla decided to flee Avernus, hoping that Talan had done the same.
She now resides at Vander’s, in Sigil’s Lower Ward, in a room she shares with her fellow Indep, Jazra. She wants a laboratory to continue her research, though the purpose of that research remains a mystery.
When she met Talan again in Sigil, Hexla’s attraction to him resurfaced; this time, he did not resist her charms.
Hexla has rediscovered the formula for the elixir of youth, a minor artifact that reduces the age of anyone who drinks it. She needs powdered dragon teeth to make it in useful quantities.
Hexla is a headstrong, suspicious, and independent woman who was almost happy to live by herself in Avernus, but didn’t realize the depths of her loneliness until Talan came along. She feels there may be more to her relationship with Talan than sheer physical attraction, and hopes that he’ll give that a chance.
Hexla has been adapted from her appearance (as an older wizard) in “To Baator and Back,” in Well of Worlds.
